Le 188° Restaurant and Lounge, Hong Kong

The location for one of the scenes of an upcoming movie starring Daniel Wu and Joseph Chang, Le 188° Restaurant and Lounge boasts panoramic views of Victoria Harbour.

Come lunchtime, Le 188° offers an irresistible deal—- a semi-buffet lunch!  You get the best of both worlds—- buffet and a la carte!

The buffet spread is reasonably generous and more importantly, the food is of good quality.  You have a fresh seafood buffet consisting of fresh mussels, raw oysters, prawns and whelks.  They replenish all the fresh seafood as soon as it gets empty.  This is not a cheapskate restaurant.

I was also pleasantly surprised that in addition to raw oysters, they also have oysters baked in cheese. They were so savoury and satisfying!   All the oysters, raw or baked, are reasonably big and thick.  Once again, this is not a cheapskate restaurant.

The rest of the buffet spread has got a quite a large variety— soups, bread, salads, canapes etc.  Though this is a buffet, even the tiniest canape was executed with attention to detail eg the salmon roe or baked bacon on top.  I was impressed.

The main courses were executed with precision.  My steak arrived perfectly, precisely medium-rare, exactly what I had requested.

They were delicious.   Once again, they had bothered paying attention to the execution, even though this is just a buffet.

What I really appreciated about this restaurant was that the tables were spaced reasonably far apart.   In the competitive restaurant business, this is so rare these days.  Usually, tables are placed so close to each other you have to squeeze around tables and chairs back into each other/ into a wall.  Here, you definitely have space to comfortably walk around  tables, and you will not be disturbed by the next table’s conversation.   In addition, there really are not that many tables in this restaurant anyway, so this restaurant never gets noisy.

The waiters were immaculately dressed in a black and white and they speak very good English.  In other places, even those with Michelin stars, though they speak English, they may not necessarily understand you, and they don’t have the confidence to clarify.  All this leads to a frustrating experience.  Here, you have a seamless dining experience.

This seems a restaurant which will be appreciated by someone who seeks real quality and not just after the next trendy dining hotspot.  When I was there, the other diners were well-dressed, soft-spoken C-level executives.  This is a quality crowd.  This is not a trendy place patronised by hungry wannabes.

With a spacious environment, a soft-spoken decor, quiet noise levels  and quality service, this is an ideal place for business lunches.  This is a very respectable place to bring your clients.

自助餐部分相當大方,更重要的是供應的美食品質優良。海鮮類包括了鮮蚌、鮮蠔、蝦以及海螺。食物一被取完就會立即補充,徹底展示了餐廳的大方。


除了鮮蠔以外,餐廳也供應了酪烤生蠔,讓我非常驚喜!這些烤生蠔是如此美味也讓人滿足。這些生蠔無論是生的或是烤的都一樣肥美多汁。再次強調了餐廳的大方。


自助餐的其餘部分也種類繁多, 包括了湯、麵包、沙拉、卡納佩等等。雖然這是個自助餐,就連最小的卡納佩都獲得了細節上的注重– 例如它上麵點綴的鮭魚卵或烤培根。這讓我印象非常深刻。

這餐廳讓我最賞識的一點就是桌子相隔的距離相當遠。如今在競爭激烈的餐飲業內已經是個非常罕見的現象了。一般,桌子相隔的距離都非常狹窄,至於顧客門行動不方便,椅子也常常互相撞上或背靠牆壁。在這裡,顧客擁有足夠的行動空間,也不會被鄰桌的談話打擾。另外,這家餐廳的桌數不多,所以從來不會顯得吵。

侍應生們個個身穿黑白,衣冠楚楚,講的是一口流利的英語。在別處,甚至是在獲得米其林星的餐廳裡,侍應生們即時說得出英語,卻可能不理解,也沒有信心澄清。這難免會令人有些苦惱。但在這裡您的用餐經驗將會是天衣無縫。

看似這是一間能讓追求高質量的顧客欣賞的餐廳,而不是僅僅引來追時尚的人潮。當我在這用餐時,周圍的人都是西裝筆挺,說話輕聲細語的C級管理人員。這是一個有等級的客戶群。 Le188°不會是一個時尚崇拜者出冒的餐廳。

具備著寬敞的環境,低調的裝潢,寧靜的聲量及優質的服務,這是在午餐時刻招待客戶的絕佳選擇。

Each component of our dishes has been carefully sourced and cooked in an honest and rustic way. Salt that is packed full of minerals, olive oil with that peppery hit in the back of the throat, the finest whole sea bass that we could find, a handmade porchetta stuffed with Italian fennel sausage…

Fish & Meat dishes are designed to be shared, family style and have been cooked by a talented team, who simply focuses on the best produce and cooking methods, to perfect the fish, meat and homemade pasta dishes.

Fish & Meat is 3,500 square feet with an outdoor terrace nestled on the corner of Wyndham Street and Glenealy Street, looking down on to the Fringe Club and Central.

Fish & Meat is designed with Scandinavian influences and a modern farm décor.

The restaurant has 85 covers including two private rooms and a bar.

On Sundays Fish and Meat offers a delicious brunch at a very good price.  For only HKD$390, you get to select from a buffet and a selection of a la carte main courses and a la carte dessert.

The buffet includes fresh oysters, salads made from herbs, squash, quinoa etc.  I am happy to report that all the salads are exceptionally delicious, and I am someone who does not usually like salads.

Make a reservation.  The brunch is extremely popular and the restaurant fills up.  It is extremely popular with families as children under 12 get to enjoy brunch free of charge.

FRITES Causeway Bay, Hong Kong Nov 2015

FRITES, the popular Belgian bistro serving authentic European fare, has recently opened a fourth outlet at the convenient location of Causeway Bay.

The new outlet, totaling 4000 square feet and 150 seats, is designed like an authentic European bistro, just like its predecessors.  There are warm wood panels, high floor to ceiling windows, stained glass (like in a church), the signature long bar and communal tables.

With over 80 different kinds of Belgian beer, including Trappist and Abbey beers, this place is a popular spot to unwind after work.  There are also sweeter fruit beers which appeal to ladies.  Each brand of beer has its own glass.  That is the level of attention paid to details in this pace.

The fare served up is comparable in authenticity to the decor.  I tried the Hoegaarden Mussel pot (available in 1/2 kg pot or 1kg pot). Prepared with chopped coriander, fennel, lemon zest and Hoegaarden beer, the lightness of these vegetables complements and brings out the sweetness of the mussels. For a place named FRITES, the fries certainly do not disappoint.  Thick and very crisp, they are fried a perfect golden brown.

The schnitzel and frites here is the best schnitzel I have ever tasted.  The plate consists of a parmesan crusted pork loin, pan fried golden brown and accompanied by frites and a crispy apple slaw.  The crust was crispy and savoury yet the inside was juicy.  This is the thickest schnitzel I have seen.

You might want to end the meal with a sticky date pudding topped with ice cream, a sure hit with the ladies.

All the portions here are huge.  Asians usually have to share to finish the food.

When I walked in, I was just bowled over by the autbenticity and attention to detail of the decor.  I felt I was transported to Europe immediately.  The authenticity of the decor and cuisine makes this an requisite stop in the dining scene of Hong Kong.

這家店的食物也極大程度上還原了歐式風格。我試吃了由比利時傳統風味白啤酒熬製的貽貝湯(有0.5千克和1千克的份例選項)。這道菜輔以切碎的香菜、茴香、檸檬皮和白啤酒作為點飾,不但爽口,還烘托並激發了貽貝的香甜。此外,對於一間以“薯條”命名的風味餐館,它的薯條也必然值得一嚐。果不其然,FRITES的薯條沒有讓人失望,色澤金黃,口感濃郁而又酥脆異常。

這間店的炸肉排和薯條也是我吃過最好吃的炸肉排。上好的豬排裹著帕爾馬干酪煎至兩面金黃,輔以炸薯條和脆蘋果色拉作為配菜。豬排表面酥脆可口,內裡多汁,是我所嚐過的最厚實的炸肉排。

飯後甜點,強烈推薦甜糯的紅棗布丁,配以冰淇淋,備受女士們的青睞。

FRITES考慮到亞洲人喜歡分享共吃食物,所以這裡的食物分量也都很足。


甫一進店,我就被FRITES逼真而精緻的裝飾所吸引,讓我感覺自己正身處歐洲。還原度極高的歐式裝飾和菜品,使FRITES成為香港必去的用餐聖地之一。

The one and only Michelin starred Bistro in Hong Kong

The Upper Modern Bistro, the vision of multi-Michelin starred Philippe Orrico, in Sheung Wan just off busy Hollywood Road , serves the perfect marriage of familiar and comforting French bistro dishes, tapas and more elaborate cuisine with an Asian twist.

In 2014, Upper Modern Bistro has been awarded a coveted Michelin star in the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2015.  Upper Modern Bistro is among eleven restaurants to obtain their first star this year and the only bistro in Hong Kong – and one of the few bistros in the world.

Upper Modern Bistro is the clever amalgamation of Philippe’s extensive travel experience, technical skill learnt in France’s top kitchens, as well as his own personal curiosity of the world’s cuisine.  The menu is ingredients led— fresh, light and modern, and the menu changes with the seasons.  Philippe is best known for the inspiration he gathers from ingredients.  Imaginative dishes are created with care and passion.

The interiors are a particular highlight here.  Upper’s fresh light, stylish interiors are by Tim Shephard of Three Wise Monkeys, who worked closely with Philippe to create a modern brasserie, with a vibrant, relaxed atmosphere where the kitchen is the focal point of the room.  The cocktail bar and dining area are linked into one harmonious room by the creation of a dangling petal-inspired ceiling.

You have to try the aperitifs here.  They are quite unlike what I have ever tried.

Normandy oyster, Ponzu marinade

The Ponzu marinade gave one of my all-time favourite appetizers, raw oysters, a really refreshing, unusual twist!  My dining experience was off to a great start!

Foie gras creme brulee, poppy seed

OMG!  I never imagined one of my “luxury” ingredients foie gras could be re-imagined as creme brulee.  This foie gras creme brulee is very, very creamy and goes perfectly with the croutons that come with it.

Grilled Octopus, smoked eggplant, red wine sauce

This one is a killer!  I can totally see why this place was awarded with a Michelin star.  The play of different temperatures and flavours was a total play on the palette.  It was unusual and just exciting!  You must try this when you come here.

Roasted Maine Lobster, Macaroni, Lingzhi, Yuzu emulsion

Each component on my dish was expertly executed.

This main course pairs perfectly with Domaine d’Elise Petit Chablis 2014

Vanilla rice pudding, caramelized bananas, yoghurt sorbet

A wonderful play of textures.  I loved that the dessert was not heavy.  It was light and gave a nice, sweet finishing touch to the meal, just what a dessert should do.

I also ended my meal with the wonderful W&J Graham’s fine tawny port.

Upper Modern Bistro is open Monday to Thurday 12.30pm to 10.30pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm to 11pm, Sunday 11am to 10.30pm.  On Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays brunch is served 10am to 3pm, followed afternoon tea.  The lunch menu at upper Modern Bistro starts at HK$138 for three courses and corkage is HK$100 per person.

现代小酒馆是由菲利普丰富的旅游经验,和在法国顶级厨房所学的技术,以及他个人对于世界各地美食的好奇心的巧妙融合。他的菜单主导—新鲜,明亮且现代,并随季节更改。菲利普最出名的是他从采集原料所得到的灵感进而创造出富有想象力的菜肴。

店内的装潢是特别亮点。清新淡雅且时尚,是由三猿餐厅-蒂姆·谢泼德所设计,他与菲利普密切合作建立出一个充满活力,充滿轻松的氛围且现代化的小酒馆,厨房更是酒馆的焦点。鸡尾酒酒吧和用餐区是透过建立以悬挂花瓣为灵感的天花板所链接成一个和谐的空间。

红酒醬烤章鱼佐煙熏茄子

这一道完全中了我的味蕾!我完全明白为什么这个地方被授予米其林星。不同的温度和味道在调色板中起舞着。这是不寻常中的绝佳精彩!当你来到这里,你一定要试试这道。

灵芝柚子醬烤缅因州龙虾通心粉

我的食盘里每个元素都被熟练地处理了。这道主菜与2014年的Domaine d’Elise Petit Chablis白酒搭配的无懈可击。

In the midst of the skyscraper offices at Central is the excellent afternoon tea at Clipper Lounge at Mandarin Oriental.

The afternoon tea set consists of

You must try the Taste of The Legend tea.   This is a custom blend tea exclusive to Mandarin Oriental.  This is an exquisite oolong tea from China, that features subtly sweet spicy notes of vanilla and cocoa-caramel, floral and orange essences deliver a rich aroma, as notes of citrus tease the palate.  This tea is amazing — you can distinctly smell and taste the various components (sweet spiciness, vanilla, cocoa, caramel etc).

The afternoon tea is extremely popular.  You will be hard to find an empty table without a reservation. On a weekday afternoon when I was there, Clipper Lounge was entirely full with expat businessmen talking business and society ladies conversing.

The afternoon tea is extremely convenient to get to.   Mandarin Oriental is right above one of the exits of Central MTR station.

I love it that the waiters here are immaculately dressed, speak good English and are very polite.  The ambience exudes old world glamour.
