mezza9, Grand Hyatt, Macau Nov 2015

Based on the concept of mezza9 in Grand Hyatt Singapore, this mezza9 is an all-round stimulation of the diner’s senses.

Created by the cutting-edge Japanese interior design firm SuperPotato, the eclectic, highly textured 292-seater space is defined by giant, roughly-hewn stone blocks forming counters and lining walls, as well as an eye-catching array of lattice-patterned metal screens.

Other than in the main restaurant, guests can also choose to dine on the outdoor terrace; in one of four semi-private, Japanese wood-lined booths; or in one of three 10- to 12-seater private rooms. One of the private rooms is housed within a ‘wine cellar’, complete with vaulted brick-lined ceiling, wooden barrels and a lounge area for pre- and post-dinner drinks.  This particular private room feels very expensive.

Walking through mezza9 Macau, the diner experiences elaborate counter displays and theatrical show kitchens, which offer all-round stimulation of the diner’s senses. Vibrant colour and texture is provided by floor-to-ceiling displays of fruit and vegetables; oversized bowls of ginger knuckles, garlic bulbs, pumpkins and chestnuts; and giant jars of fresh ingredients such as papaya halves, kumquat and pomelo.

Tables are interspersed between tanks of live lobsters and seafood, glistening ice-filled crustacean stations, sugar cane machines. and shelves of culinary merchandise and utilitarian cooking equipment.

Mezza9 Macau offers different wining and dining experiences under one roof: Macanese; Grill; The Sushi and sashimi bar; The Wok; The Steam Basket; The Deli; The Pâtisserie; The Wine Cellar and Bar.  From one succinct menu, guests can order deep fried soon hock, soy sauce or charcoal grilled mixed meat or arroz de pato de cabidela (Macanese duck rice).

Seafood on Ice—- lobster, black mussels, whelks, Japanese scallops, alaskan snow crab legs

Seafood lovers would do well to order the seafood platter.  Imagine a mountain of seafood including lobster, sweet, delicious Alaskan snow crab legs, mussels, prawns and whelks.  The seafood platter is substantial and most people order it to share it.

Crab cakes, mango and coriander salsa, remoulade sauce

The crab cakes are one of their signature dishes.  The crab cakes are indeed full of crab meat.  I had tried crab cakes in other restaurants where the inside is full of flour filling.

Deep fried soon hock, soy sauce

The fried Soon Hock was amazing.  The execution of this dish is quite difficult.  The fish needs to be fried slowly so that the exterior is crispy while the inside remains moist.  The fish tasted fresh and free from any odours and unpleasant flavours.

Mezza9 is also a good place to try out Macanese dishes.

Portuguese green soup, chorizo

The potato soup is very creamy and combines the use of locally sourced vegetables for crunchiness.

African chicken

The African Chicken has a mild spicy, curry flavour as well as hints of coconut fragrance.

Macanese duck rice

The Duck Rice is savoury and filling.

Mezza9 excels in Portuguese desserts.  They are famous for their Portuguese egg tarts.  It comes to the table warm.  The crust is flaky and the custard is rich with vanilla and egg flavour.  It is a winner.

The Serradura is delicious.  Serradura or Sawdust Pudding is a Portuguese dessert made up of sweetened, vanilla whipped cream and serradura. Apparently, ‘serradura’ translates to ‘sawdust’ in Portuguese. And the ‘sawdust’ in this dessert is actually crushed Tea Biscuits!

With such a large variety of quality cuisine, Mezza9 Macau definitely counts as an exciting destination.

Imperial Court, MGM Macau, Macau

Walking into MGM MACAU’s signature Chinese restaurant, Imperial Court, from the magnificent VIP entrance hall or the lively casino floor, guests are transported into a world where the art of Chinese cooking takes centre stage, surrounded by distinctive architecture, authentic Chinese interiors and the highest standards of service.

Famed consulting chef Chow Chung partnered with experienced chef Louie Wong have created an exquisite menu of Cantonese favourites as well as seasonal specialties from other parts of China that locals and foreigners alike have come to know and love. Hailed throughout the region, Chef Chow was recently crowned “Best Chef in Hong Kong” by a popular Japanese television show and continues to create authentic Chinese masterpieces, this time lending his talents to the menu at Imperial Court.

Choosing the components of a meal becomes an art for Chef Chow Chung and the Executive Sous Chef of Chinese Cuisine, Louie Wong, as every dish on the menu is refined and sophisticated while at its heart remaining true to the time-honoured traditions and heritage of Chinese cooking.

Appetiser Combination

Steamed crab roe dumpling

Baked barbecued US black pork bun

Barbecued duck liver and pork skewer

Sweet and done in the most authentic Chinese way

Sauteed prawn with chilli and shallot

I loved the punchy heat.

Simmered Australian baby spinach with wolfberry and fresh lily bulb

I loved this one.  It was light and fragrant.  The soft baby spinach contrasted with the sweetness of the wolfberry and the crunchiness of the lily bulb, and firmly supported by the meaty stock.

Dan Dan noodle with crab roe

Delicious smooth noodles complemented with a creamy soup

Sweetened almond cream with egg white

Silky in texture and lightly sweet, what’s not to like?

Sweetened black sesame rolls

Baked custard puff pastries with coconut juice

A journey for the senses, this dining experience is not just about food. Visually, the hallmark of the restaurant stands in the centre of the room, an imposing stone sculpture from Nanjing featuring Chinese dragons wrapped around a giant column. This work of art is complemented by installations along several of the walls, down which water flows softly over textured cream-coloured stone.

Diners feast on sumptuous dishes made from the freshest ingredients in the comfort of high-backed chairs in cream with bright pink, purple, green or blue Chinese silk draped down the back. The overall effect is an atmosphere that marries understated tones with the bold qualities of typical Chinese architecture and the universally recognised, mouth-watering tastes of traditional Chinese cooking.

Imperial Court is the perfect setting for a private affair, to entertain important guests or to enjoy a family gathering. High doors with opaque glass detailing separate the six private rooms on the periphery of the restaurant from the inviting main area. Some of the rooms have their own flat-screen televisions, as well as personal lounge areas for pre-dinner drinks or after-dinner tea and conversation.

The restaurant blends traditional, fresh ingredients with the trademarks of Chinese cooking philosophy. For work, for play, for everything in between, Imperial Court is a signature restaurant like no other, creating exquisite dishes by royal decree.

Rocks Hotel, Macau Nov 2015

Rocks Hotel is an extremely pretty hotel located in Macau Fisherman’s Wharf.  Located right by the waterfront and opposite Sands Casino, the hotel provides fabulous views of the very long and impressive Friendship Bridge.

Built and decorated in Victorian style, this hotel provides a welcome and atmospheric change from the aggressive modern commercialism of the rest of Macau.  The Victorian style extends to the rooms where the bed, paintings, lamps and bathroom furnishings all have character and extend the Victorian feel of the hotel.

Extremely exclusive, there are only 72 rooms and they fill up easily.

Being so pretty and by the waterfront, it is easy to understand why the hotel is sooooo popular for photo shoots.  There is always a photo shoot going on.  ALWAYS.

It may be a bridal shoot or for some fashion magazine.  The spiral staircase with a beautiful  4-storey mural behind and suspended chandeliers on top is a to-die-for unofficial photo stop for all visitors to Macau.

There is only one restaurant in the hotel——-  Vic’s.  It is a pleasure to sit on the terrace and enjoy the sea breeze and their popular afternoon tea.

Right beside the hotel is Fisherman’s Wharf where you find trendy restaurants and pubs offering a wide variety of cuisines.  After dinner, one can of course take a lovely stroll along that waterfront.

Babylon Casino is right beside the hotel.  Sands casino is right across the street where you can also find McDonald’s and KFC.

The hotel provides a free shuttle to Macau Ferry Terminal from 1100 to 1900.  The ferry leaves at the start of the hour and at 30-minute mark of the hour.

Antonio, Macau, Nov 2015

Housed in a pretty 3-storey yellow building, “Antonio” is a dining instituition in Macau.

The restaurant is intimate.

Dark wood is complemented with blue table cloths, blue curtains and beautiful blue and white tiles on the walls. Flowers hanging from the ceiling and little floral arrangements on the tables inject much welcomed pockets of life into the space and provide needed balance.

Prawns sauteed with Garlic

Garlicky and stimulating, the fire from the garlic punches the palette lightly and wakes it up for more palette sensory stimulation. Ice cold and slightly acidic,  the Alvarinho is a most excellent accompaniment to this appetizer.

Creamy Asparagus Soup

This soup is amazing.  It is the creamiest asparagus cream soup I have ever tasted.  The bits of asparagus in the soup are tender and crunchy, which only add to the quality of the soup.

Portuguese Rabbit with White Bean Stew

The rabbit is imported from Portugal.  This is yet another amazing dish.  The rabbit has a distinct flavour and oh-so-satisfying. Though not exactly the star of the dish, the surrounding legume and vegetables have been executed with equal care.  The white beans are soft, the carrots are firm but give way easily to bite, the baby corn and broccoli are crunchy. Each was cooked to the degree of perfection.  I was amazed at the attention given to the supporting ingredients of a dish.  The care given to supporting ingredients only speak of the high quality of cuisine provided by this restaurant.

An excellent dessert is the restaurant’s own “Antonio Porto Reserve”.

Located away from the rowdy Cotai strip where all the tourists and integrated complexes are, the restaurant is nevertheless packed EVERY night.  It is also telling that the patrons are locals and not clueless tourists lured in by hype.  Reservations are a must here if you expect to get a seat.

Stuffed to the gills with accolades, this restaurant deserves each and every one of them.

最熱銷的甜品是這家餐廳自創的”Antonio Porto Reserve”。
