Sips Cafe, Johor Bahru

Delicately tucked away in an alley at Jalan Bukit Meldrum is a timeless personality—Sips Cafe. Just 5 minutes away from City Square JB, Sips Cafe screams classic English romance with its warm orange-red hued exterior and distinctively white grid windows. At night, its signboard comes to life with its illuminating yellow light. A British colonial architecture and a modern take on its inside is indeed a blend of old and new.

For lunch, pick up some value yet generous lunch sets and good old coffee. Weekday set lunches includes Chicken Chop, Pizza and Pasta. Top Recommended Cafe: JWC The Factory, Johor Bahru

Nestled amongst the enclaves of Mount Austin, with a multitude of cafes, stands Just Want Coffee. Being the first cafe in Malaysia to have imported a coffee roasting machine, it sets the bar for premium roasted beans that are not just aromatic, but full of body and flavour when brewed.

The juxtaposition of modern and traditional is captured in the way Just Want Coffee has designed this branch, known as The Factory 30. Furnished with an industrial vintage look in mind, it is housed in an actual factory complete with an actual shutter and containers in its surrounding. At first glance, faced with a big, grey shutter, one may be confused as to where the entrance of the cafe is. That is just the pseudo entrance and cafe hoppers will have to go in through the glass door on the left of the shutters.

With so much hype on the outlook and hipster vibe of this place, it is comforting to know that the coffee as well as food does not disappoint.

Thanks to K-drama, korean fried chicken is all the rage now.  The korean fried chicken here is crispy on the outside and fresh, tender and juicy on the inside.  They have thoughtfully provided some salad for balance as well as a disposable glove for clean eating.

The JWC signature japanese curry rice is so filling!  It comes with a delicious chicken cutlet, sticky japanese rice, and come drizzled with savoury japanese curry.

If you do make a trip to Just Want Coffee, you’ll not want to pass up a delectable slice of their signature tiramisu cake. The spongy layers, infused with liquor and generously soaked with aromatic coffee, sit between rich mascarpone custard and whipped cream. This mouth-watering treat is served frozen, perfect on a hot and humid day in JB.

Despite the hassle of having to navigate to this area, Just Want Coffee has met all my expectations of a delightfully indie cafe with a delectable menu. Thus, I would most definitely return to this place for a quiet afternoon siesta over spectacular coffee and perhaps a Tiramisu.

Sprout, Johor Bahru

Many of us have heard and tried out the trendy, hipster cafes in JB. But has it ever occurred to you that you can have a quality fine dining experience?

Brought together by Chef Mui and Chef Joseph – having experiences in Singapore, London and a short stint with a Michelin-starred restaurant in Oslo, they have combined their culinary skills in this minimalist Scandinavian setting, providing diners a superb European fine dining experience.

Sprout is located in the corner of Kim Teng Park along Tebrau Highway. It can be tricky to find though. Look out for the pedestrian bridge and you can spot a mini “Sprout” signboard.

The menu is creatively divided into various categories: Snacks, Soil, Sea, Land and Desserts. I would recommend trying out the 3-course menu with your choice of main course and Snacks on the house. It is value for money with prices ranging from RM103 – RM185, allowing you to savour and enjoy the whole full dining experience.

Passion fruit, lime, mint.

Refreshing.  Great contrast between sour and sweet.

Cucumber, mint, basil.

This one is a standout.  It is truly light and refreshing.

Beetroot, raspberry vinaigrette, fennel.

Amazing flavours and highly imaginative.  Truly world class and a testament to the chef’s skills.

Slipper lobster, parsnip, granola, shellfish sabayon.

Great blend of savoury of sabayon and the sweetness and crunch of granola.

Lamb loin, black garlic, leek, buttermilk dressing.

Another world-class dish.  The flavours all blend together hamoniously.

Pork jowl, pineapple, shallots, crispy pork fats.

Satisfying.  The protein is well-balanced by the sweetness of pineapple and shallots.

This restaurant is truly world-class.  I couldn’t believe I can find such quality and value in JB.  This restaurant is definitely on par, if not better, than the restaurants of Singapore.
