The Sterling, Malacca Apr 2015

English

The Sterling offers luxurious accommodation in a beautiful heritage building in Malacca. The hotel is just minutes away by foot from the famous Jonker Walk with its many restaurants and popular weekend street market.

I stayed in a Riley room. The room is huge. They could easily put another double bed in the room. I really like having ample space to move about in my room. Before checking in, I had thought that my room would be cramped but it felt free and spacious. The sense of luxury is heightened through the use of dark gray. The bathroom is equally spacious and features a gigantic 2-person jacuzzi in my own bathroom, complete with water jets and bubble streams. I really enjoyed having a warm soak and having my tense muscles massaged every night. It really helped me to relax. The shower was also quite special: you can pick from 3 modes: hand shower, rain shower and water jets. For water jets, you just stand upright and let 3 water jets massage your back. I am happy to report that the water pressure for the rain shower is very strong (the pressure for some rain showers is so miserable).

There are around 20 channels on the TV. It is a mixture of local and satellite channels. Being a small boutique hotel, there is no gym nor swimming pool.

In an UNESCO heritage town like Malacca, it is fitting to stay in an atmospheric heritage hotel like The Sterling. The location could not be better—– it is only a short walk to The Stadhuys and Jonker Walk. It is also possible to walk to the shopping malls, Mahkota Parade and Dataran Pahlawan but it is a hefty 20-25 min walk.

Popiah Lwee

Jalan Kubu (in between Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Hock and Jalan Hang Jebat aka Jonker Walk)

Recommended by other guidebooks but oh-so-disgusting!  It has pork lard in it.  I didn’t know till I bit into it and I felt sick for 20 minutes afterwards.

RM2.20

13 Nov 2011 Farmosa Chicken Rice Ball, Malacca, Malaysia

Farmosa Chicken Rice Ball

21, JALAN HANG JEBAT, 75200 MELAKA.

The establishment has two outlets located a few doors from each other.

Chicken Rice Ball is considered a trademark dish in Malacca and this establishment with its two outlets and celebrity endorsement a bit of a Malaccan institution.  The dish is basically the chicken (steamed/ roasted) from Chicken Rice paired with rice balls the size of fishballs instead of the usual rice (though that is available as well).  For RM5, you get a few slices of average chicken and 5-6 rice balls which are nothing special and hardly fill you up.  Paired with chaotic service, average chilli sauce (so crucial when it comes to chicken rice) and you get a tourist trap.

Try once and run far away.

Merchant Café

This is a watering hole right in the middle of Chinatown that serves surprisingly decent food.

I ordered the Black Pepper Chicken (RM18).  It was outstanding.  There was two chunks of chicken on a bed of mashed potato and some grilled vegetables on the side.

The chicken was perfectly seared on the outside, very little oil, while on the inside the chicken remained juicy and oh-so-well marinated.  The masked potato was the real deal (no powder mix here) and the grilled vegetables were definitely 5-star hotel standard.

The food took a long time to come (30 mins).  You might want to order some starters while you wait, even though the portions of a main course are certainly enough to fill you up.  One bite into the chicken and the wait is definitely worth it.  Where else can you get a well-executed, filling meal for RM20.85 (taxes inclusive)?  Definitely recommended.

Clean restrooms.

I ordered the Kampung Fried Rice (RM6.80).  While it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t anything to shout about. It comes with a fried egg (sunny-side up) on the side and two slices of cucumber.  The stand-out was the Chicken Rendang (RM12).  While it may look uninspiring (a bowl of dark, slightly oily chicken), bit into it and you won’t regret it.  The chicken melts in your mouth and it is so flavourful! I’ve had Chicken Rendang before but none like this.

The ambience of the café was very dark but pleasant enough.  There is a small verandah out at the front where you can watch the world go by.
