Modern Colonial Indian Cuisine @ Anglo Indian Cafe and Bar Chijmes, Singapore
Though it occupies a very central downtown location, I have never quite thought of Raffles City as a dining destination. Why? I don’t know. I mean, there certainly are restaurants in Raffles City but it just doesn’t pop into mind when I think of the question “Where to dine?”
When I reached Chijmes on a weekday during lunch hour, Anglo Indian Cafe and Bar was the busiest restaurant along the stretch of restaurants in which it was located. There is indoor air-conditioned seating as well as sheltered alfresco seating.
Tomato Shorba $12
Thick tomato soup with added seasoning.
Tangy, sweet with faint spices, it whets your appetite for more.
Suggested pairing:
Domaine Bousquet Chardonnay (ARG) $17
Both are light enough to go together. The bouquet of the Chardonnay is a great balance to the mild spices.
Fried Fish Amritsari $20
Fish fillet marinated with unique combination of spices and herbs. Popular street food from Amritsar, Punjab
Wow! The aroma when the dish arrived has to be experienced to be believed. The crispiness if the fried fish is perfectly paired with an ice-cold Sauvignon Blanc. The acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc cuts through the grease of the fried fish easily.
Suggested pairing:
Tiki Sauvignion Blanc (NZ) $18
Refreshing and acidic. Perfect companion to fried food.
Butter Chicken (Chef’s Special) $26
Cubes of boneless chicken cooked in tomatoes, butter and cream. This popular dish was first introduced during colonial rule by an old Delhi restaurant.
It was so creamy, tangy yet not heavy at all. The tangy tomato base is addicting.
Suggested pairing:
Domaine Bousquet Chardonnay (ARG) $17
Garlic Naan $6
The bread was so aromatic. It was so delicious I kept eating it on its own.
Gulab Jamun $7
Traditional Indian dessert. Spongy, milky dumpling soaked in sugar syrup
It was just the right amount of sweet something to round off my meal.
Cappuccino $6
How about pairing the Gulab Jamun with an romantic cup of cappuccino?
Having dined here, now I know I have a great dining option in the City Hall area. Haha!
