Competent American Diner at Jalan Riang @ Bernie’s, Singapore
Those who live near Serangoon know the quiet little dining enclave Jalan Riang. Bernie’s, an American diner, has recently set up shop in this quiet residential neighbourhood.
Chicken Gumbo $7.50
Spring chicken, onions, peppers, chicken broth, spices
It is flavourful and full of spices. The chicken falls off the bone easily, which is a testament to how long the chicken has been cooked. Even the celery is soft.
House Red Wine or House White Wine $12
I tried the House White Indomita Chardonnay. On its own, it is drinkable, though unexceptional. Paired with the Chicken Gumbo, it is exceptional. The savoriness and umami of the chicken stock in the gumbo really pairs well with the refreshing acidity if the Chardonnay.
Whoopass Con Carne $7
Spicy stew made of minced beef, jalapenos, onions and a blend of spices
Flavourful and filling, the blend of spices is attractive and lifts this version above other Con Carnes.
Waldorf Salad $7
Apples, grapes, celery, raisins, mayo, walnuts
This Waldorf Salad is one of Bernie’s signature dishes and I can see why. It is sweet and crunchy (from the fruit). The mayonnaise adds creaminess and warmth. The walnuts add warmth too. It is cold and refreshing. The salad is all the more refreshing after the heat of the Whoopass Con Carne.
Mexican Chicken $12
Spiced half spring chicken served with homemade tomato salsa
I never order chicken as my entree because chicken is so mundane. I ordered this because my friend told me to. On arrival, the chicken looks dark, black and uninspiring. How can it be delicious? But it was. The spice mix was quite, quite addicting and makes you want to (m)eat more and more. Don’t eat the chicken together with salsa in the same bite. The salsa overpowers everything. The Chardonnay does really go well with this imho.
NZ Augus Ribeye Steak $25
Grilled Ribeye Steak (250g) served with homemade brown sauce
At only $25, it is a really, really good steak. The portion is big and great value for money. The steak is properly seasoned. I really appreciate the rosemary rub — it really brought the score above 90/100 for me. It is so flavourful it doesn’t need the gravy
Insane New Orleans Bread Pudding $9.50
Bread loaf, milk, vanilla extract, spices, tequila sauce
Warm and comforting, it is a great way to end an American meal.
Bernie’s quiet locale is highly attractive. Bernie’s is a place where you can have an extremely competent meal.
