Affordable Thai Food in Tiong Bahru @ Soi 47 Tiong Bahru, Singapore

If you are a fan of Thai food, you probably are familiar with the restaurant Soi47.  Starting from their first outlet in Toa Payoh, the restaurant has currently expanded to 4 outlets— Toa Payoh, King George’s Avenue, Clarke Quay and their latest outlet Tiong Bahru.  Their fifth outlet, located in Orchard Central no less, is projected to open within a week of the time of writing this article.

Soi 47 serves up familiar Thai dishes at affordable prices.  I do think that while being extremely delicious, Thai food is mostly overpriced.  Soi 47’s prices are indeed more reasonable and affordable.

Soi 47 Tiong Bahru is located within the very hip enclave at Yong Siak Street and the decor is very now —— overhanging fake plants, fake greenery wall, neon pink strip lights that spell out the restaurant’s name.

Iced Thai Milk Tea $3
A must to cool down in the hot weather of Singapore.  Soi 47 Tiong Bahru is un-airconditioned. Diners with pets may be seated in the outer, sheltered area.

Homemade Breaded Prawn Cake $8.50
This is a great find… the patties are thick and more importantly, they really taste like they were homemade.  The patties have got a high meat-to-flour ratio, so they are bouncy and you don’t feel lethargic after eating them.

Mango Salad $4.80
Nothing wrong with this salad.  It is a refreshing and welcomed balance to the other dishes.

Claypot Tang Hoon with Prawns $12.80
The glass noodles (Tang Hoon) have taken up some of the flavour and so are quite flavourful. They are also quite generous with the prawns too —- look, 5 of them!

Steamed Seabass with Soy Sauce $19.80
The centrepiece of my meal.  The fish was very fresh and the soup was sour, garlicky and mildly spicy.

This is is great value for money.  I have had the same dish with similar portion size in other restaurants and it was quite considerably more expensive.

Red Ruby $3
They gave A LOT of the red rubies, which is exactly the way I like it.

If you are in the Tiong Bahru area and are sick of western cafes, Soi 47 would be a very good alternative.  In fact, if I am in the Vivocity or Mount Faber area, I would still travel a short distance to come to Soi 47 to dine.  I do miss this experience.  Sigh …
