I popped into the newly opened Providore at Mandarin Gallery along Orchard Road.\u00a0 <\/span>The owners and team of Providore were previously the management behind Jones the Grocer.\u00a0 <\/span>Like Jones the Grocer, Providore offers gourmet products.\u00a0 <\/span>Providore\u2019s first outlet is called \u201cWarehouse\u201d located in Outram.\u00a0 <\/span>As the name \u201cWarehouse\u201d implies, it is a huge space selling cookware and gourmet products.\u00a0 <\/span>It does not, however, offer cooked food.\u00a0 <\/span>Providore\u2019s outlet at Mandarin Gallery is the first outlet to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n

I heard that they offer tapas-style small dishes for sharing.\u00a0 <\/span>Always interested in tapas, I popped in to try.<\/span><\/p>\n

I first tried the Sauteed Prawns, with Chorizo, dried chilli and capirete sherry vinegar (S$14.50 + 7% sales tax).\u00a0 <\/span>The smell of vinegar was really strong.\u00a0 <\/span>I mean, really. \u00a0<\/span>But the shrimps tasted all right though.\u00a0 <\/span>The Chorizo was a highlight—it tasted authentic.\u00a0 <\/span>Though the bread wasn\u2019t extraordinary, this dish really needed the bread to go along with it.\u00a0 <\/span>Otherwise, the vinegar would have been too tart.\u00a0 <\/span>One of the shrimp wasn\u2019t properly de-shelled.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, I tried the Grilled Mackerel Crostini & Crispy Bacon, with roasted cherry tomatoes, basil and tomato vinaigrette (S$18.50 + 7% sales tax).\u00a0 <\/span>The cherry tomatoes were perfectly roasted. The rest, average.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then came possibly the best dish I tried that day \u2013 Grilled Asparagus & Wrapped in Prosciutto, with poached egg, black truffle vinaigrette & red shiso.\u00a0 <\/span>They used good asparagus (firm, fresh, with great snap), so the battle was half won. With the prosciutto and sauce, it came together well.<\/span><\/p>\n
