AMOY Hotel, Singapore
Top Boutique Hotel in Singapore
AMOY is a little gem of a boutique hotel by Far East Hospitality located in the heart of Singapore CBD.
Housed in a converted shop house, the front of the hotel is Fu Tak Chi Musuem, which used to be the first and oldest temple in Singapore. Walking under the lanterns and passing over the threshold of the entrance, one breathes in the sadness and burden of the history of the place. As the centrepiece of the museum is the model of a Chinese junk. Then’ as one passes through sliding glass doors into the lobby, one is greeted by bright airy sunlight (thanks to the covered skylight) and. chinoiserie. There is a wall covered with various Chinese surnames. The female staff is dressed in an uniform adapted from the cheongsam or qipao (the traditional Chinese dress). The ambience of chinoiserie is further heightened by Chinese paintings on gigantic flower pots.
The theme of chinoiserie continues in the rooms. Most noticeably, one is struck by the chinese lattice on the TV wall.
The wash basin resembles blue and white Chinese porcelain.
There are little touches here and there in the room such as Chinese tea pots.
With less than 30 rooms over 3 levels (Level 1 is the lobby and breakfast area), there is no gym, no pool and no jacuzzi. However, if guests wish to use the above facilities, they can inform the reception of AMOY, and then proceed to AMOY’s sister property, Rendezvous Hotel (3 subway stops away). There is also a branch of True Fitness 5 minutes away in China Square Central, where you may be able to buy a day pass.
There are also no restaurants in AMOY. Not to fear, AMOY is surrounded by dining options. There are restaurants of every cuisine and taste to suit your liking—-Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Belgian, Indian, Indonesian etc. There are also sandwich stores such as Quiznos and Subway as well as a food court in the vicinity. Just around the corner from AMOY are several pubs which are filled with executives from nearby offices come weekday evenings. There is also a 7-eleven nearby as well as a supermarket in the basement of China Square Central just 5 minutes away.
The rooms offer many conveniences. Firstly, there is free wifi for all rooms. There is a nespresso machine with free capsules. Available on the television are around 18 international channels and 6 local channels. Every room comes with a free mini-bar, inclusive of free snacks and free beer.
Located in between the financial district and Chinatown, guests can walk to the stock exchange, the various banks and souvenirs and cheap eateries. Right outside the hotel is a subway station (Telok Ayer Station) as well as a taxi stand. On weekdays, there is always a line of taxis waiting there. I can’t vouch the same for weekends.
Breakfast at AMOY is a simple affair. There is always an Asian starch such as Fried Rice or Fried Noodles. You also get various kinds of baked goods, a protein such as sausages, two choices of juice and two choices of cereal. You also have yoghurt and of course, coffee and tea.
Service here is friendly and efficient.
All in all, if you want a hotel with an Asian theme, history, great location and transport convenience, AMOY is an excellent choice.
