Best Value For Money Wagyu in Singapore @ Hey! Yakiniku (+ Most Affordable Sapporo Beer?)

Located in Bugis Junction, right opposite National Library, you would be forgiven if you think Hey! Yakiniku is the latest franchise to descend from Land of The Rising Sun, but no, Hey! Yakiniku is a homegrown yakiniku restaurant.

Walking into the restaurant, one immediately notices how immaculate and uniform the restaurant looks.  The decor simply radiates Japanese efficiency.

As Covid regulations are being relaxed, this restaurant is perfect as the seating is arranged in intimate booths with some degree of privacy.

The grill is an electric grill.  The switch and control of the heat is located at the side.

The eating utensils are cleverly hidden in every diner’s individual drawer.  Remember I said “Japanese efficiency”?

Right, on to the food.  Hey! Yakiniku offers a clean, efficient, pleasant yakiniku experience at very mainstream price points.  A yakiniku set (consisting of choice meat, rice, miso soup, kimchi/ salad/ spicy beansprout) can be as affordable as $8.90.  All prices are nett and inclusive of GST. In downtown Singapore, in an air-conditioned, non-fast food, non-hawker environment?????  Is there a better deal?

Meat Lovers’ Paradise

Duo Cut (Beef Short Plate & Skirt Steak) $13.90

100g

One of the most requested sets at Hey! Yakiniku.  The Karubi (beef short) is thinly sliced and has beautiful marbling.  When grilled, the fat makes it so tender.

BTW, you can dip the beef in spicy sauce or garlic sauce, or just enjoy its natural sweetness.

Gyu Tan $8.90

50g

Australian Wagyu MB4/5 $29.90

180g

The highlight of the meal.  I can vouch — this is real wagyu. Unbelievably tender and juicy.  Wagyu — one of the real pleasures in life.

Marumi Pork Set $18.90

150g of Pork Belly & Pork Collar

Hey! Yakiniku is the first yakiniku restaurant to serve Marumi pork.

Marumi pigs are raised in Kawanami-cho, Miyazaki.  They are not raised to be “delicious”, but rather to be healthy. To promote their intestinal activities, farmers use microbially-activated well water and a yeast-blended feed.

Marumi pigs are prized for their “odorless sweet fat”. Indeed, the marbling is beautiful, the meat/ fat is free of any sour stench.  The collar is particularly tender.  Not usually a fan of pork, I happily ate this and can even envision myself picking this over beef sometimes.

Being a family-oriented restaurant, there are also donburis and bentos prepared by chefs in the kitchen. Adults can order these for kids and focus on enjoying their own dinner without having to busy themselves grilling meat for kids.

Yakiniku Don (Sliced Beef with Garlic Soy Sauce) $14.90

The beef is thinly sliced.  Kids should have no problem chewing.

Wagyu Steak Bento $21.90

Taking wagyu back to the office and inducing the jealousy of everyone sounds just like the kind of  thing I would do.

Sapporo $7.90

Is this the most affordable Sapporo beer in Singapore?  I think it might be.
