French Dining Made Affordable @ La Belle Epoque, Singapore

La Belle Epoque is a new-ish French-Asian restaurant located riverside along Boat Quay.

Watermelon Tartare $10

Smoked watermelon cubes, pickled shallots, spearmint, pomegranate, pears cubes, yuzu dressing, Japanese cucumber cubes, watercress salad

Refreshing for the hot Singapore weather.  It is even more welcomed if you sit at the al fresco riverside area (they also have bar tables and an  air-conditioned area for dining).

Fig & Peach $10

Grilled peach, grilled fig, taleggio cheese, yuzu dressing

Fantastic and light.  It is traditional, I can’t say it is groundbreaking but it is just right.  The fruits are sweet which pairs well with the savouriness and umami of the cheese.

Gambas $16

Chilli prawn, garlic, coriander, chorizo

Another fantastic appetiser.  This is the best Gambas Prawns I have had so far.  I don’t usually like Gambas Prawns.  It is usually too spicy and worse, it is usually greasy.

The chef has kept this Gambas light in oil and spiciness.  In addition, he has cleverly added chorizo for the added dimensions of savouriness and umami.  Most importantly, and what turned this dish from a “no” to a “yes” for me was the considerable amount of chopped coriander on top.  They add freshness and balance the spiciness and oil.

Canard du Ciel $22

Braised duck leg, duck breast, seared four gras, pommes yam, coriander port wine sauce

Nothing wrong here.  The skin of the duck is crispy.  The mashed pommes is actually made of taro which I really appreciate.  Taro has a lower glycemic index than potatoes so you don’t get a sugar high and feel sleepy.  You get to remain alert.  I really appreciate that.

Apple Tartin $10

Roast apple, cinnamon tartlet, vanilla gelato

The crust of the tartlet is really delicious — it was really firm and crusty.  The vanilla gelato was delicious too.  I sat in the al fresco area so I really like a cold something to round off the meal.

I am certainly glad to have gotten acquainted with La Belle Epoque.  The food is good. The price-to-portion ratio is fantastic.
