Macau Museum, Macau

Travel back to a period of cultural crossroads when you pay a visit to the Macao Museum where interwoven ethnic cultures and various communities await to give you a glimpse of what Macao was like back then through historically rich dioramas and relics.

Start your journey on the underground first floor as you stream down the river of time, flanked by a comparative presentation of the way Western and Chinese civilizations settled, prior to the arrival of the Portuguese at the Pearl River Delta in the 16th Century. Unearth and discover the ongoing commercial activities, religions and cultures of the two civilizations during that time. Upstairs, visitors can immerse in popular art and traditions. Expect to be transported back to moments of religious ceremonies, traditional festivals, entertainment and daily lives of the people of Macao through interactive displays. Ascend to contemporary Macao on the ground floor to learn characteristics of what constitutes city life and how it is portrayed in the literature and the arts. Fun fact! – prior to the museum’s inauguration on 18th April 1998, the Museum was a Fortress that served as a principal military defence structure before being converted to the old Meteorological Services in 1965.

Located atop in the Fortress of Mount Hill, the Macao Museum, built by the Jesuits in the early 17th century, offers a picturesque panorama of the city. Face west and soak in the breath-taking view of the Ruins of St. Paul’s. Together with the Mount Fortress, these are significant historical monuments of the Historic Centre of Macao that would be a shame for any visitor to miss. As of 15th July 2005, the Historic Centre of Macao has also been officially listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Preserving its architectural character and special configuration, the Macao Museum continues to inspire wonder to any visitors entering through its doors.
