Mod-Asian Fusion Cuisine in a Scandinavian Decor at Hathaway in Dempsey Village, Singapore

Smacked right in the middle of hip expat and yuppie enclave Dempsey Village is the new restaurant Hathaway.  No, the owner is not Anne Hathaway.  No, the owner is not Jay Chou whose daughter is named Hathaway.  Owned by the same team behind Bread Yard, Hathaway is one of the few new restaurants brave enough to open during the Covid pandemic.  The cuisine is Mod-Asian-Fusion.

The interior of Hathaway is bright with lots of natural light flowing in through the glass panes all along one side of the restaurant.  The view is green; there is an al fresco counter dining area if that is your thing.  The interior can be described as Scandinavian minimalist chic.  Think neutral wood tones on white.

To cater to all races in Singapore, Hathaway is a non-alcoholic restaurant.  Instead, Hathaway has a bespoke range of non-alcoholic drinks based on ginger ale which they fermented themselves, and Kombucha and Seedlip

Rosemary

Earl Grey cooked rosemary, rosemary & olive tonic, Seedlip Spice 94

It certainly was refreshing and aromatic.  Quite effective as an aperitif.

Langoustine Tartare

Langoustine, Black Caviar, Tapioca Pearl Chip, Pistachios, Lemongrass and Galangal Infusion, Ku Chye Oil

This was quite interesting —- it has a variety of textures and flavours.  Worked quite well as an appetiser.

Nasi Ulam

Local Leaves Flowers and Roots, Suan Yong Char

Authentic flavours beautifully complemented with edible flowers.  What more to ask for?

Ah Nya’s Fish Curry

Heirloom Recipe, local Kuhlbarra Barramundi, fondant potatoes.  This curry is a much beloved dish of our dear Ah Ma and we wanted Hathaway to be the vehicle to preserve the deliciousness of this unique and delicate recipe.

Possibly Hathaway’s signature dish, this recipe descended from owner Ivan’s grandmother.  The gravy was extremely flavourful and the fish was firm and fresh.  This dish comes with a bread stick that is all the more convenient to mop up the delicious gravy.

Seri Muka

Kueh Salat, Apom Berkuah Ice Cream, Pengat Pisang sauce

This dessert is a symphony of different flavours.  You have glutinous rice, coconut milk, sugar and pandan leaves. A wonderful twist on beloved local flavours.

What I really appreciated about Hathaway is the service.  It was prompt, friendly, not overly so and quite genuine.
