Moonlight Cake House (Pelangi), Johor Bahru

The Moonlight Cake House at Pelangi has recently reopened after an extensive renovation and it is gorgeous.  Neutral grey walls, hanging lights and lots of wood, it certainly is in the top tier of dining establishments in Johor Bahru in term of ambience.

The menu is typical Johor Bahru—- Asian, Western,  noodles, pasta rice, the whole shebang.

Tropical Fruit Pitcher RM$15

The little jug comes chock full of cut fruit eg kiwi,  orange slices,  strawberries, even lychee, immense in lemon tea.  I appreciated that the lemon tea was only mildly sweet and you could taste the natural sweetness of the fruits. It certainly was refreshing and the mild sweetness lent a feel of healthiness to it.

The soup was creamy and the puff crust was fragrant and delicious.  The presentation was simple but beautiful.  I like their attention to detail.

Beef Bacon Asparagus RM$17.85

Look at the amount of garnishing (bonito flakes) they heaped on this dish and look at the portion itself.  They really are very generous.  The dish itself, the savoriness of the bacon,  the refreshing crisp of the asparagus and the umami of the bonito flakes, works well.

Sirloin Steak with American Cheese (200g/ 20 min ++) RM$52.10

200g of sirloin steak, cooked to your liking topped with American cheese sauce, parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, mashed potato and coleslaw

Very classy presentation.  The mozzarella cheese was chewy and stretchy.  Delicious!

Coming to Moonlight Cake House, of course you have to try the cakes.  I am happy to report that 2 of their best-sellers, Strawberry Shortcake and the Black Forest Cake,  were made to international standards.  They had an ample amount of cream and were, surprisingly and appropriately, not too sweet.  Hence,  they were not too heavy and sickening.

Strawberry Shortcake RM$9.25/ slice

This is a must try Japanese fresh cream cake with fresh strawberry slices

Made with Japanese fresh cream, the Strawberry Shortcake was indeed light.

The Black Forest Cake RM$9.25/ slice was of course heavier but not too chocolaty,  which I liked.  I don’t like chocolate.

All in all, Moonlight Cake House serves quality cuisine in a beautiful environment.  This restaurant is worth visiting.
