Aussie Cafe and Deli Experience in Heartlands @ Surrey Hills Grocer, Singapore (Pet-friendly and Ample Parking)
Started by affable owner Gek who has lived in Australia, Surrey Hills Grocer brings a slice of the bustling Aussie cafe scene to Singapore.
The very busy cafe also has a gourmet grocer section where discerning customers would appreciate the premium products such as wines, sauces, juices and fresh produce imported from Down Under.
The cafe itself is al fresco and has a hanging garden vibe. The menu is extremely focused and features curated brunch, all day items and some sides.
Breaded Oysters $10
Plump and juicy breaded fried oysters come in 4 and citrus and housemate dill tartar
The oysters are indeed plump and juicy. They taste relatively “fresh off the ocean”,
Crayfish Benny $24
Toasted English muffins layered with sour cream, marinated crayfish, molten eggs, crayfish reduction hollandaise and herbs
The eggs are the very definition of “runny”. When burst, beautiful liquid yellow yolk immediately run all over your plate.
The briny crayfish add an “ocean-y” dimension.
Tasmanian Salmon $26
Slow cooked sashimi grade salmon served medium rare on a bed of mushroom reduction barley grains, marinated roe
The salmon felt fresh and light. It was expertly seared – the skin was crisp but the fish was still firm and juicy (unlike lesser cafes where the seared salmon is dried out and brittle).
The real find here is the barley risotto. The cheesiness and faint hints of truffle oil make it very warming.
Steak Sandwich $27
Australian King Island Sirloin ¾, house mustard mayo, peppers relish, sea salt flakes
A generous steak on an open-faced sandwich. The steak was beautifully seared and still retained a beautiful red in the middle.
The bed of peppers relish had completely caramelized and was unforgettably sweet. It provided great balance to the steak.
The bread had a lovely crustiness.
Tip: I see some customers requesting this dish without the bread. In other words, you can enjoy just a steak with caramelized vegetables.
For desserts, Surrey Hills Grocer only has ice cream, including Earl Grey Lavender. Should I try it? I have never had a satisfactory experience anywhere with Earl Grey flavoured desserts. The flavour is usually too faint.
I decided to YOLO and go for it.
This is the best Earl Grey flavoured dessert I have tried. The Earl Grey flavour was discernible. The also discernible lavender adds feminine charm.
How about a Flat White ($5) to go with your ice cream?
Surrey Hills Grocer is located at Arena Country Club Block B. Parking was ample on the week day I was there.
