1875 The Mex, Johor Bahru

1875 The Mex is an interesting new arrival in the Johor Bahru dining scene.  Run by an Australian couple,  Chef Shaun has cooked in 5-star hotels such as Hilton and Sheraton.

Freshly made spicy guacamole and corn chips RM$16

The guacamole was surprisingly good. It came chilled and tasted really fresh.  Thank goodness the spiciness was barely discernible and simply provided a muted kick in the background.

Fresh and Soft Tacos RM$13 for 1; RM$20 for 2; RM$27 for 3

The Mex marinated beef with Texan BBQ mayo or Mexican jerk chicken with chipotle chilli lime and coriander mayo. Served with tomato, lettuce, onion and cheese.

It tasted very authentic and the portion was very generous.

The Texan Burger RM$25

Sweet pickles, fried onions, maple grilled bacon, cheddar cheese, grilled beef patty and Texan BBQ mayo

This one wasn’t too Mexican. It was a good old-fashioned, hearty American hamburger and it was satisfying.

Oven Baked Chicken Chimichanga RM$30

With red beans, rice, cheese and tomato topped with sour cream

This one did it for me.  It is warm and heartening.

Have you noticed the coleslaw on the side of the entrees?  Come for that!  That might be the most delicious coleslaw I have tasted.

Good Old-Fashioned Apple Pie RM$15

Drizzled in caramel sauce and served with ice-cream

Yes! Good old fashioned apple pie. Nothing ground breaking but authentic and on point.  I particularly like this as the authenticity simply transported me away from hot,  humid JB to the temperate countryside in some Western country.

Overall,  all the dishes were executed with thought, care and expertise.  1875 The Mex makes for an interesting experience in JB.
