District 9, Johor Bahru

District 9 is a semi-airconditioned cafe in relatively affluent Mount Austin.  Its neighbours are many other eateries.  Ample parking is right in front of the cafe.  At the front of the cafe is a bubble tea stand which serves quick-stop customers.

The decor alternates between “clouds” made from wire mesh and glitter light wrapped around them and transparent globes filled with glitter light.

Taiwanese variety shows are hugely popular around Asia and District 9 delivers a whopping taste of Taiwan to your taste buds.

Brown Sugar Pearl Milk Tea (RM$7.90)

Excellent fusion of Taiwanese and Malaysian flavours.  It is milky, sweet and at the bottom is a layer of tropical Gula Melaka syrup.

Crispy Fried Chicken Drumstick (RM$13.90)

Marinated using five spice powder and then fried at a very high temperature, the drumstick has a golden, flaky crisp skin but the juiciness of the tender white meat inside is preserved.

Mee Sua with Stewed Duck and Stewed Pig Intestine (RM$9.90)

The duck skin is glisteningly beautiful.  The stew flavour has completely penetrated the soft, tender flesh.  Similarly, the pig intestine has also completely taken up the flavour of the stew.   It is bouncy and delicious.
