Feast like a Maharaja at Royal Taj on Sentosa, Singapore’s Island of Fun
Royal Taj is located on the second level of Mess Hall, the dining wing of Village Hotel Sentosa. The building is a two-storey British colonial building.
Village Hotel Sentosa is right behind Universal Studios Singapore, Resorts World Sentosa and is a stone’s throw away from Madame Tussauds Singapoore and Imbiah Cable Car Lookout.
The interior is fitting of the restaurant’s name Royal Taj. It is quite classy, with Western oil paintings and flowers and chandeliers.
Delhi La Chaat
Savoury snack with freshly ground Chaat masala spices added with a sweet, sour and tangy chutneys
Sweet, sour and tangy indeed, with a lovely crunch. It was a wonderful appetizer and certainly whetted my appetite.
Pani Poori Shots
Popular street food of India, with crisp fried dough balls are stuffed with potatoes, sprouts and spicy tangy water
This is quite fun and would certainly get conversations going. You pour the shot into the ball and pop the whole ball into your mouth in one shot. I had fun doing this.
Murg Lahsooni Kebab
Golden garlic marinated succulent chicken kebabs, cooked in clay oven
The chicken was succulent and tender, just very mildly spiced and with a lovely char aroma. They didn’t neglect the details and provided a lemon wedge on the side. The lemon juice added bright acidity. The tangy slaw on the side balanced the oil and heaviness of the protein. Overall, it was very balanced and well-conceived.
Royal Taj Butter Chicken
Medium light spiced chicken, smoky cream tomato sauce cooked in dried fenugreek and cream sauce
Lamb Rogan Josh
Prime cuts of mutton, Kashmiri sauce, aromatic dried ginger dust and fennel dust
Malai Kofta Noorani
Vegetable dumplings cooked in silky tomato and cashew gravy
Saffron Pulao
Long grain basmati rice flavoured with saffron strands and cooked in a broth resulting in an aromatic dish
The meat main courses were all very creamy, which went very well with the fragrant saffron rice.
Garlic Naan
It was just the amount of garlicky and the chewiness was just right too.
Kesari Rasmala
Cottage cheese balls immersed in creamy milk with saffron
The restaurant manager Abhishek told me it would be very sweet but it was ok. I was afraid there would be a cottage-cheesy taste but the balls were neutral and tasteless. They took up the sweet milk well. The texture of the balls was like if you immersed bread into sweet milk. Overall, this dessert had an exotic accent to it and was quite nice.
The restaurant doesn’t miss attention to details. They use Schott Zwiesel glassware for their wines, something even more acclaimed restaurants don’t do. By the way, their house white wine, Casa Silva, Sauvignon Blanc, Chile, was absolutely delicious.
You might walk pass the kitchen door on your way to the restroom. You would see that the kitchen is clean.
Overall, Royal Taj offers very competent cuisine.
