Jiak Modern Tzechar, Singapore

Jiak Modern Tzechar (tzechar literally means cook, stir-fry) serves up delicious authentic hot wok stir-fry dishes in a clean, air-conditioned environment.

One side of the restaurant is gorgeous floor-to-ceiling glass panes overlooking possibly the most verdant little street in Singapore.  Try to get a table by the window— the luscious shades jade and greens are just so relaxing.

Calpis Soda Fizz with Red Tea Jelly  (Choice of mango/ lime/ passionfruit) S$5

Possibly one of the best drinks I ever had.  It was soda paired with mango puree and chewy jelly.  Sweet, but with the tang of the mango, not overly so.

Claypot Golden Chicken (small – S$10; big – S$16)

Quite an interesting dish. There was a hint of prawn paste in the crispy fried chicken.  The sauce was savoury, umami as well as sweet, spicy and sour (from the Thai chilli sauce).  So, as you can see, this dish basically hots all the spots. The chilli and spring onions add lovely, arresting colours.

Sambal Kang Kong (small – S$8; big – S$12)

I was quite pleasantly surprised the kang kong was very tender and fresh. They seem to have a good vegetable supplier.

Curry Fish

A lovely mild curry with a happy yellow colour.  While not ground-breaking in conception nor execution, it certainly was authentic and satisfying.  There was also plenty of legumes.  Once again, the legumes seem very fresh and had a gentle snap to them.  It was so satisfying to crunch those legumes.

While the food was lovely, what was most impressive was the can-do attitude of the staff.  They go about with their low-key but effective service, the best kind of service!
