Maison Kayser, Singapore
Maison Kayser is a 17-year-old brand that originated in Paris and is brought into Singapore by Boulangerie Eric Kayser Japon (the Japanese arm). In Japan, there are 18 Maison Kayser outlets and the best-selling item is the croissant (S$2.60, service and sales taxes not included). In Singapore, there is an outlet at the basement of Scotts Square.
The prices here are not exorbitant at all. On the surface, the prices seem reasonable. Service, however, is unexpectedly atrocious. I ordered a Set B (croissant, pain au chocolat, and a hot beverage for S$9.60, service and sales taxes not included). The waitress neglected to bring me butter and jam for my croissant. I had to ask for it. Even McDonald’s has better service – when you tell them your order is for take-away, they automatically ask you “Chilli sauce or ketchup?”. The croissants are not warmed up. ????? Even Delifrance warms up your bread for you. Who would pay for room temperature croissant?
They serve your bread/ pastry on these plastic mini-trays. Please!!!!! Switch to ceramic please!!! Even Delifrance uses ceramic. I rather they switch to ceramic (better, classier experience for the diner) and do away with that piece of logo-ed paper on the tray. Probably due to franchise agreement they have to keep it. In other words, business reigns at this place and the diner is second —-the franchise owner makes money from the compulsory logo-ed paper and the consumer ends up paying for something that is of little value.
Business is paramount is also reflected in the coffee. They couldn’t even give me a full cup of coffee. It arrived half filled.
Though S$9.60 for the abovementioned set is not expensive at all, the overall product (room temperature croissant, half cup of coffee, cheap plasticky tableware) and the atrocious service render this place bad value for money.
