Top Recommended Restaurant Bangkok: Gaggan

Having opened in 2010, it only took four short years for Gaggan Anand to bring his eponymous restaurant to global recognition. The restaurant made top 10 consecutively in the last 3 years on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and remains the only Indian restaurant to make it on the list.

So what will Gaggan be remembered for? Its gorgeous architecture, for one, is something to look back on. The two-storey colonial style building sports a good few floor-length window panes, giving curious pedestrians a glimpse into the restaurant’s interior. In the daytime, this serves the practical purpose of allowing plenty of natural light into the room, although the better view is arguably during nightfall – when warm lighting within the restaurant shines through the window panes, like a lantern giving the dim streets its glow.

Never one to disappoint, the exterior is not the only view Gaggan has to offer. The cooking process itself is possibly just as important as the completed dish, which is why gastronomes mostly prefer a dining experience at the chef’s table, the equivalent to a front row seat to a MasterChef live shoot. At Gaggan’s, however, there is the option to make your dining experience extra special. Just a level above the chef’s table, a recently opened dining space known as ‘The Lab’ can be found. Equipped with freeze dryers and the brain of a mastermind, this is where Anand experiments with his magic touch – bringing new life to ingredients with his ways in molecular gastronomy.

And his innovative dishes are just a little short of peculiar. That said, we give him credit for letting the average commoner ease into the hardly-normal affair, with his introductory dish being a pickled cherry soda, served in a test-tube thrust into a bucket of ice. A familiar enough flavour for one not to be too taken aback, yet with that extra little something that reminded us that this is nothing close to a visit to our everyday diner.

Next in line – a spiced yoghurt sphere – was also of similar nature.

Then came the surprises – combinations that never occurred to us – that we adored. No one could stop gushing about how the uncooked curry cookie was simply decadent, or how the spicy pork vindaloo had such robust and full-bodied flavour.

So what will Gaggan be remembered for? The answer is straightforward and has been there for all to see. Its mastermind, its mad scientist, its magician, and most of all, its chef. Anand. And no matter his future endeavours, we wish him the best of luck.

After all, it goes without saying, that wherever Anand is, there will be magic.

ON DINING, Kitchen & Lounge is located on 28th & 29th floors of 18 On Lan Street, Central, within walking distance of Central MTR station.

The interactive dining kitchen style restaurant and buzzing lounge designed for foodies with its own menu boasts incredible views across Hong Kong.

ON DINING is the latest creation of Philippe Orrico following the launch of his first solo venture, the Michelin starred Upper Modern Bistro, which opened just one year ago.

The menu at ON DINING is inspired by the fresh ingredients and vibrant flavours of southern Europe and the Mediterranean. It features comforting dishes that are simple and well executed

ON DINING is set over two floors, the Lounge is on 29th floor and the Kitchen on 28th floor.  I was impressed by the modern contemporary interior.  The interiors, by Tim Shepherd of Two Men in Hats, pay homage to 1950s Riviera chic.  Sleek, clean lines,  delivered through a palette of glossy whites and  natural woods create a fun, relaxed atmosphere that is casual, informal and will make guests feel that they are getting away from it all… right in the heart of busy Central.

On weekends, ON DINING is a gathering spot for the fashionable and trendy.  On weekends, they also offer a amazing set lunch.  Imagine picking from the following carefully curated and expertly executed dishes while enjoying the spendid views of Hong Kong:

I tried the Chest nut soup with white truffle Chantilly.  OMG! It was so sweet.  The sweetness of the chestnut went perfectly with the fragrance of the white ruffle.  The soup was really piping hot– as it should be.  It means they paid attention to detail.

I tried the silver cod.  This main course is a three-way balance: the light and fresh fish complemented with the rich lobster flavour and further heightened by the piquillo sauce.  Finally, the dish is topped with a bit of fresh herb.   This is a very delicate and hard to achieve balance of perfection.

Again, the platter is so visual.  This is sure to be a hit with ladies.

Coffee or tea

ON DINING, Kitchen & Lounge will open for lunch and dinner Monday to Thursday from midday to 10:30pm. On Friday and Saturday from midday to 11pm. On Sunday, ON DINING Lounge will be open from 11:30am to late. A three course lunch is from HKD 188 to HKD288, dinner menu costs from HKD350 to HKD550 per person. ON DINING Kitchen will seat up to 45 guests including a private room for up to 12 people, the Lounge will seat up to 50 guests.

On Dining 的菜单是从北欧和地中海的新鲜食材与多彩味道取其灵感。它含有着多种令人身心安慰的菜肴,简单而利落。

On Dining 场地包括两楼,位于28楼的休闲厅以及,28楼的厨房。我被充满现代摩登风味的室内设计打动了。此设计是由Two Men In Hats 的Tim Shepherd 操办,满溢50年代的里维埃拉风格。圆滑简洁的线条通过了光油白及天然木材的色彩制造了一个轻松,趣味的休闲气氛。让人在忙碌的中环的中心中脱离现实生活的压力,得到身心的舒缓。

周末时候On Dining就成了时尚潮流品味者的重心基地,餐厅也提供了精致的周末午餐配套。现象自己从这些通过精心挑选,准备的菜肴中自选自己心仪的午餐同时欣赏香港绝境。

Gaylord is a fantastic dining find right in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui.

As soon as one steps in, the sense of luxury and royalty is immediately felt.  This is Indian fine dining done right.  There are red chandeliers and cream and red upholstery.  One dines on linen table cloths and fine China.

Vegetable Samosas (4 pcs)

Crisp spiced coned patties stuffed with potatoes and peas

The samosas are very generous and flavourful.

Tandoori Chicken

Barbecued spring chicken marinated in a saffron flavoured spiced yoghurt

The tandoori is generous and comes steaming hot.  The colour is beautiful and the flavour has completely permeated the meat. The chicken is tender and juicy on the inside.

Rogan Josh Kashmiri

Tender boneless lamb in an onion and red pepper sauce

The lamb shank curry was wonderful.  It was extremely, extremely flavourful and the lamb shanks were particularly tender. The tenderness of the shank particularly stood out in my mind.

It was great to balance a rich and flavourful meal with spinach.  They made the cheese cubes in the spinach themselves.

Garlic Naan

As someone who grew up with Indian cuisine, I can attest that all the dishes are most authentic.  This restaurant is literally 5 mins away from Tsim Sha Tsui by foot.

For authentic Indian cuisine in a fine dining environment, Gaylord is the place.

Tamarind satisfies all your senses from offering a veritable feast for your taste buds to providing a spectacular sight from its outdoor terrace. The fabulous new Pan-Asian restaurant is located in Wan Chai, and serves the best of Thai, Indian, and Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant’s warm interiors set the ambience for romantic dinners by the sea while its outdoor lounge, overlooking Hong Kong’s stunning skyline, makes it a perfect place to gather for drinks. Tamarind is also a perfect party venue for cocktail functions, wedding celebrations, corporate events, and theme parties.

The Cuisine

Tamarind’s Thai & Vietnamese kitchen is headed by Chef Amoo. He captures the essence of Thailand and Vietnam and recreates it in his dishes at Tamarind. The enticing menu features Thai pomelo salad with grilled prawn, oven roasted black cod marinated in tamarind, royal Thai massaman curry of chicken and baby potatoes and stir fried spicy pork neck served on a sizzling plate.

On the other side of the kitchen is Chef Ravilal Bhandari, who leads the Indian Kitchen.  Some of Chef Bhandari’s mouth-watering specialties include pani poori trio, crispy puffs stuffed with tangy potatoes with a selection of spiced water, tandoori salmon in yogurt with dill, fennel, honey and mustard, lamb dum biryani, basmati rice and boneless lamb braised with spices and saffron cooked in a sealed pot.

Prawn Peri-Peri

This is the perfect appetiser—- crusty prawns paired with a refreshing salad.  Goes perfectly with a glass of champagne.

Tom Yum Kung

Very authentic. En point.

Chicken Korma

Very creamy and fragrant.  Many pieces of chicken which go perfectly well with the dry, crusty and chewy Naan bread.
