Shek O Beach, Hong Kong

As one of the densest cities in the world, life in Hong Kong is often described as fast-paced and busy.  Ironically, a quiet and laid-back beachside village resides on the South of Hong Kong Island – Shek O.

Shek O boasts a plethora of facilities, with its beach being the main attraction.  A little to the north of the main beach is the Big Wave Bay, which is in a more rural setting, and is Hong Kong’s only designated surfing beach – perfect for surfing enthusiasts.

Since the heat can get very intense during the day, beach umbrella rentals are available for those who wish to relax at the beach while having the peace of mind that their skin is being protected.  For those who wish to play in the water to cool off from the sweltering heat, fret not as changing rooms and shower areas are free for use.  Of course, it is all fun and games until someone gets hurt.  Thus, the beach has been equipped with shark nets and lifeguards have been stationed around the area to ensure everyone’s safety.

To appease hungry stomachs after a long day at the beach, beach-goers have a wide selection of open-air dining restaurants to choose from, allowing diners to appreciate the spectacular scenery. Another option would be using the barbeque area to grill your own dinner for some extra fun family bonding time.

Just a last tip, it is suggested to visit Shek O during weekdays if possible as the beach is relatively packed by the locals during weekdays.

How to get to Shek O

You must now be wondering how to get to this beach paradise.  Although Shek O is secluded, it is easier to get there than you think.  Simply hop onto bus 9 from MTR Shau Kei Wan Station Exit A3 bus terminus and alight at the Shek O Bus Terminus.  Seating at the window seat is definitely a strong recommend to maximise your 30 minute ride by soaking up the picturesque scenery along the way!
