The Hottest Burger in Singapore – Hambaobao, Singapore

Hambaobao is the burger joint du jour to be at.

Already popular with hipsters in the know, its hidden location on Level 3 of Trio Building (Sam Leong Street – 5 mins by foot from Farrer Park MRT) does not hinder it from being full house on a mid-week evening.  

It always bodes well about the deliciousness of the food when an F&B business expands.  From its humble beginnings as a hawker stall, Hambaobao now occupies air-conditioned premises.

The decor is decidedly retro – think a nostalgic Hong Kong Cha Canteng.  The centrepiece is the countertop bar/ open kitchen where you can witness your very burger being prepared by chef and owner Ryan Wee.

Tip: try to reserve a table by the floor to ceiling windows so you can enjoy views of Singapore’s dusk over the rooftops of neighboring shop houses.

True to its roots as a homegrown, Singaporean business, Hambaobao serves up many original burgers featuring local flavours or ingredients.

Ayam Buah Keluak $8

Perhaps the most Singaporean of the burgers is the Ayam Buah Keluak Burger.  Minced chicken is mixed with sambal and buah keluak.  The resulting patty has an inimitable South East Asian flavour.  Topped with delicious cabbage chap chai, this is one handy Nonya flavour in a mouthful.  

Crispy Pork Belly $8

This has got to be the most photogenic burger I have ever seen.  The green of the cucumber contrasts nicely with the golden bun and crispy skin and the slight red of the meat.  The skin was done really well – it was really satisfying to bite into it and hear it crackle as it breaks.

Hand-cut Fries $2.50

I have many misgivings about McDonald’s but many would agree that their fries are pretty darn good.  Hambaobao’s fries come pretty close and that is a feat.

The staff here are young, hardworking and polite.  They truly impress for being calm and efficient while under storm on such a busy night.

Hambaobao’s uniquely Singapore (pun intended) burgers are the very definition of mod-Singaporean cuisine.
