Instagram Alert! Luxury Halal French Cuisine and Decor (at affordable prices) @ The White Label, Singapore
You know, after Chinese New Year and all the Chinese food that entails, I was restless for European cuisine. I needed to be whisked away, to travel, you know.
The solution? I decided to check out The White Label, a halal French-Malayan casual fine dining bistro in Kampong Glam (near Haji Lane and just a few doors away from Masjid Sultan).
The White Label was doing brisk business when I arrived for lunch on a weekday. The decor is casual luxe. It felt very French immediately. The bistro also features a bakery counter at the front of the bistro where they sell their homemade French pastries, bread and cakes.
Looking through the menu, it is targeted and features beloved classic French comfort food.
French Onion Soup $10
Beef broth, onion, cheese, baguette
I have been dying for French Onion soup and this one hit the spot. I have to say: this version here at The White Label is lighter than most French Onion soups I have tried. Being lighter, it allows you to taste the incredible sweetness of the onions. The mozzarella is delicious.
I thought the price was very reasonable.
Cherry wood Smoked Contre-filet $32
Cherry wood smoke, butter infused striploin steak. Rosemary garlic cream sauce. Sweet potato mash, seasonal vegetables
They marinate the beef in butter (yes, butter!) for 2 days before grilling it like any other steak.
After the steak is grilled, the steak is covered in a cloche and cherry wood smoke is introduced into the cloche where the steak rests for a while.
I really like the cherry wood smoke. It is unique and certainly adds another dimension to the steak. Indeed, the steak has a very attractive smokiness. BTW, the presentation looks absolutely high-class.
They should sell the rosemary garlic cream sauce by the bottle. It is savoury, addictive and goes with everything!
Short Ribs Bourguignon
Slow Cooked Beef Short Ribs. Homemade Sweet & Spicy Sauce. Mashed Potatoes &. Mixed Greens
As The White Label is a halal establishment, they couldn’t braise the short ribs in red wine. Instead, they have substituted with their own secret blend of spices and sauces and dutifully braised the short ribs for 6 hours.
The end result? The short ribs are extremely flavourful and the meat falls easily off the bone. This is a competent variation on the classic French stew.
Chicken Chasseur
Slow Braised Chicken Jumbo Leg, Sauce Chasseur. Tarragon. Served with Choice of Baguette / Pilaf Rice / Mashed Potato
The portion is gigantic! The sauce was heavenly —- it was so flavourful. I wish there was more of it — it goes well with the neutral baguette.
For a restaurant that is not that big (yet), The White Label has its dedicated pastry chef.
Creme Brulee a la Pandan $10
Rich Pandan custard, caramelized sugar, dessicated coconut, coconut sorbet
Tarte Earl Grey $10
Earl grey whip, almond crumble, almond tart, forest fruit sorbet
I liked both the desserts as they are both not very sweet. They are quite delicate, like Japanese-French desserts. Both the sorbets are refreshing.
Latte a la rose $6.50
Extremely fragrant and feminine. Instantly instagrammable.
