Excellent Service and Scene-stealing Appetisers @ Wang Dae Bak Pocha BBQ, Singapore
“POCHA” is an abbreviation of Korea words, which when translated means “Korean Street Food Wagon”. Pocha is where people in Korea got together by the street-side to eat and drink.
Established in 2014, Wang Dae Bak Pocha BBQ serves Korean Traditional Iron Grill BBQ in a fun and inviting ambience. The decor is reminiscent of the Korean Street scene back in the 70’s and 80’s. It is quite fun to step back in time and dine in such a nostalgic environment.
Speaking of fun, the fun certainly begins the moment you get seated down around a grill. The energetic staff immediately brings out a host of appetisers — you have mash potato, seaweed (super nutritious!), a soy cake type of thing, kimchi and anchovies. All of them are delicious and so healthy — the minerals from the seaweed, the good microbes from the kim chi, the calcium from the anchovies. Who says eating healthy has to be bland and boring?
Also, they pour liquid egg in around the grill to cook. There 2 types of eggs – just plain egg and egg with sweet corn kernels. Of course, I prefer the one with sweet corn kernels. I like the sweetness of the corn and they add crunch as well.
They also put kimchi around the grill to warm up so you have warm kimchi. I prefer the cold kimchi served in the side dish — the chill is refreshing, but it is ok. I always welcome more vegetables.
If you order meat, they will bring it out and actually grill it for you in front of you. The young man who grilled my meat was very nice. He is actually a student at SIM and works part time at Wang Dae Bak BBQ. He was very energetic and he took great care to grill my meat. He turned it over to check it was properly cooked. Also, if your meat is a big piece (like my pork belly), they will also cut it for you into bit size.
Finally, my young server transferred all the grilled cut pork belly into a bowl. Very thoughtful and complete service. And it was all done without attitude nor pretension.
If you need to cool down from the grilled meat, they have free iced tea on the side. The iced tea was delicious and really felt very cooling.
Chestnut Duroc Pork Belly $25
It had the right amount of fat and the meat was sweet. It was delicious.
Marinated Prime Ribs (200 gms) $32
The beef was really tender and sweet.
They also give you fresh lettuce and pickled green chilli and garlic. You MUST wrap the marinated beef and pickled green chilli and garlic with the lettuce and eat it like a wrap. It was unbelievable. The muted zing of the chilli and garlic complements the sweetness of the marinate very nicely. It was fresh yet meaty at the same time.
Half and Half Pancake $25
Seafood Pancake + Kimchi Pancake
It was a really great idea —- 2 types of pancake in one. You get to try and taste more in this way. BTW, another customer walked by, saw my GIGANTIC pancake and said “Oh, Half and Half. Cool.” I guess this pancake is really popular with customers here. They all know this pancake.
Kimchi Soup with Pork Belly $13
Nothing wrong here. It’s great to end the meal with warm soup that is also nutritious (all the probiotics again).
I really enjoyed eating here. The service of the young man who served me was excellent. All the appetisers were so delicious you almost don’t need to order anything. Almost 😉
