Alter Ego, Singapore

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Batman and Bruce Wayne, Geminis,  I think I understand the concept of alter egos and the underlying allure.

The aptly named Alter Ego is an interesting bistro that straddles both healthy food (poke bowls) and guilty pleasures (burgers, tater tots etc).

Occupying a waterfront location at tourist hotspot The Esplanade,  Alter Ego could not have had a more advantageous vantage point.  Sitting on one of the cushioned benches in Alter Ego,  you have a panoramic 180 degree view of Singapore’s city skyline.  You will enjoy views of Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the Merlion as well as the skyscrapers in Singapore’s financial district. I went on a very hot day and the sweeping vista was already majestic.  Can you imagine coming at night with the city all lit up?

Inside the bistro,  the decor consists of neutral grays, all the better to show off your colourful outfits in your #OOTD shots.

As said, Alter Ego offers a “Indulge Dirty” menu and an “Eat Clean” menu.  I only had the chance to road-test the “Indulge Dirty” menu this time. The kitchen is helmed by affable Chef Chad with F&B experience in the region.

O.L.’s Green Tea S$11

Triple sec, vodka, green tea, cranberry juice, lime juice

This cocktail is on point.  It has a lovely pink colour and a mild green tea flavour.  It should appeal to the office ladies  targeted in its name.  In any case, thanks to the tea flavour,  the cocktail felt very thirst-quenching after coming in from very hot weather.

Poke Kueh Pie Tee S$12

Hawaiian twist on this bite-sized Peranakan treat.  Choice of poke with fresh ingredients in a crispy pastry tart shell:

Avocado poke (vegan)

Original shoyu tuna, spicy garlic sesame tuna

Original shoyu salmon, spicy garlic sesame salmon, wasabi yuzu salmon, ginger miso salmon, gochujang aioli salmon

This is a cold appetiser.  It is refreshing and complex in texture.  The flavour is quite complex too,  with sweetness and slight umami.

Loaded Taters S$13

Crispy tater tots doused mercilessly in spicy jalapeno cheese sauce, maple-glazed bacon and sour cream.  Finished with a splash of hot sauce.

Crispy and delightfully sinful.

Pizza Fries S$14

Fries, smokey pepperoni, three-cheese sauce and savoury house-made bacon ketchup.

All the most “guilty” delicious things in one appetiser— cheese,  pepperoni and golden fries.  It is heaven and a dream come true.

I highly recommend getting a glass of wine to go with the above appetisers.  Alter Ego offers 1-for-1 promotion for their wines.  For example, Alter Ego offers 1-for-1 Rive Gauche Chardonay at S$10 (ie 2 glasses of Rive Gauche Chardonay for S$10).  They also offer 1-for-1 Rive Gauche Merlot at S$16.  I roadtested their wines.  I must say they are extremely drinkable.  At such prices and drinkability of the wines ,  Alter Ego probably offers the best deal in town.  I am quite shocked (and secretly pleased) that there is such a good deal to be had.  Who says Singapore has to be expensive?

Braised Shortrib Grilled Cheese S$16

A blend of gruyere and taleggio cheese sandwiched between buttery artisanal white loaves.  Stuffed with juicy, braised beef shortrib.

This is one delicious sandwich—- the sourdough bread was tasty and beautifully toasted.  I loved the crustiness of the bread.  The stretchy melting cheese was heavenly.  The beef was filling.

Double Patty Melt S$22

All-American burger.  A double wagyu fat and chuck blend patty and bacon ketchup in a brioche bun.  Served with Mexican corn and sauteed thyme mushrooms.

A beautiful and filling burger.  It tastes authentically American.
