Unexpectedly Great Food at Fashionable Cafe – Greyhound Cafe, Singapore
It was.a boring Wednesday afternoon. I was feeling … restless. I decided to head to Greyhound Cafe where socialites, local celebrities and the glitterati hang out. I mean, it is located in Paragon after all.
Hailing from Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit, otherwise known as Bangkok, Greyhound Cafe’s cuisine can be summed up in one word —– Fashion. Working with their Thai culinary roots, the dishes are always hip.
Fruity Shaky Yoghurt $9
Orange, banana, pineapple, apple, yoghurt
Wow, you can taste that this is made from real, freshly squeezed juice. I thought they would use store-bought carton juices.
Seared Scallop Salad $16
Grilled US scallops on mixed green salad bed served with honey balsamic dressing
The scallops are incredibly fresh and the honey balsamic dressing, being slightly acidic, provides great balance to the protein and whets your appetite for more. A very effective appetiser.
Salmon Carpaccio in Spicy Hot Sauce $18
Sliced fresh salmon swims in special Thai spicy sauce
This is an excellent appetizer, almost as good as a similar one I tried in Michelin-starred Nobu. This garlic provides a kick to the senses. The neutral salmon takes up the flavours well.
Weeping Tiger with Spicy Pesto $18
Medium grilled, sliced steak served on sliced cucumbers topped with spicy pesto.
Another excellent appetiser. The “grassiness” of the pesto alleviates the heaviness of the beef. The cucumber cools down the heat of the grilled meat.
I am surprised Greyhound Cafe, though positioning itself as a fashionable cafe, actually conceptualizes great food.
Greyhound Famous Fried Chicken Wings $12
Deep fried marinated mini chicken wings in fish sauce.
The chicken wings arrived in such a cloud of aroma other tables turn to look. Hahahah.
I like the crispiness and the saltiness of the chicken wings.
Tenderloin Steak with Green Curry Sauce and Rice $35
Grilled tenderloin steak cooked to your liking, topped with Thai green curry. Served with rice.
I can’t say this dish is truly groundbreaking but I like that it helps me to satisfy 2 cravings – tenderloin and Thai green curry, in 1 go.
Fresh Coconut Crepe Cake $11
Light and thin crepes, layered with fresh cream and fresh coconut meat from Thailand.
Wow, this cake is refreshing. The fresh cream is light and aplenty and the natural salts of the coconut meat contrasts and complements the light sweetness nicely.
Chocolate Banana Crepe Cake $9.90
Light and thin crepes, layered with banana, custard and fresh cream, topped with chocolate sauce.
Again, the fresh cream is aplenty and the banana flavour comes through.
For an international cafe chain, Greyhound Cafe certainty does not coast on its fame and hip factor alone. It offers up great dishes and that gives great value for money.
