Monstrously Big (and Best?) Burger in Singapore (+ kids eat for free) @ Smokey’s BBQ, Singapore

Located right in the heart of the affluent Joo Chiat neighbourhood (you will see a lot of sports cars around), Smokey’s BBQ is an authentic American BBQ/ pub owned by an American who looks like Jeff Bridges.

Authentic American BBQ Experience

Staying true to authentic American BBQ, Smokey’s BBQ uses custom built smokers imported from the US and imported mesquite and hickory wood chips, also imported from the US. Smokey’s BBQ smokes their meats at very low temperature for long hours (sometimes as long as 20 hours) to produce juicy cuts that are tender, authentic and flavourful.  They also hand-make all their sauces, rubs, and side dishes to ensure that the experience remains authentic all the way.

Beer-battered Onion Rings $9

Special homemade beer-battered onions are crispy and full of flavour.  Served with Cajun ranch.

They are incredibly crispy.  The cajun ranch sauce on the side is delicious.

Smoked Beef Chilli Nachos $18

Fresh tortillas and salsa topped with cheddar, sour cream, pickled jalapenos and homemade chilli

The beef chilli is really, really good.  Come for the beef chilli.  Seriously.  The beef chilli is so flavourful and is balanced by the sourness of the sour cream and pickled jalapenos.

Beer Paradise

I should say, Smokey’s BBQ has a HUGE range of American craft beers, in draft and in cans.  I had A LOT of fun beer-tasting.  You can get a beer-taster (like I did) and pick and choose 4 from the selection of craft beers on the constantly-changing “Beer Board”. I tried:

  1. Deschutes Squeezy Rider 7.0%
  2. Goose Island 5.9%
  3. Specific Gravity Golden Ale 4.5%
  4. Kona Big Wave Golden Ale 4.4%

Of the 4, surprisingly I like the Deschutes Squeezy Rider the most.  It had the highest alcohol content and I usually prefer lighter beers.  Squeezy Rider has an attractive fruitiness.  The other beers were delicious and drinkable too.  The surprising find of Squeezy Rider makes me think there must be more great finds here to be discovered.

Any of the 4 beers above would be great for the 2 starters above.

St Louis Pork Spare Ribs 1/3 Slab $32

Spare ribs (lower rib section) seasoned with secret dry rub and mopped with homemade BBQ sauce.

The meat separates from the bone easily and the flavour has completely permeated every inch of the meat.

US Prime Beef Brisket $29

Marinated in our secret dry rub, smoked, and slow roasted for over 20 hours, then topped with homemade BBQ sauce.

The sweetness comes through.  The coleslaw is delicious and not too heavy.

The Monster!! $33

This one is a beast!  The Classic Burger topped with smoked beef chilli, smoked bacon, double cheese, jalapenos, and BBQ sauce.

Imagine 200g of 100% USDA minced beef packed into a patty and then flame broiled to medium.   And more of that delicious smoked beef chilli, strips of delicious REAL smoked bacon (none of that reconstituted rubbish) and delicious jalapenos for that crucial balance.  Finally, the result is served on a sesame seed bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion, dill pickle and fries.  HEAVEN!

The patty was impressive.  It was handmade — it was not packed so tight and still had some looseness to it.  It was perfectly grilled — the patty had a beautiful redness at the centre of it but there was no blood dripping anywhere.

Maybe there was a lot of hidden fat in this burger but it really didn’t feel that greasy. I have seen burgers that are a lot more greasy.
