Southern Border, Johor Bahru

Popular F&B establishment Southern Border has recently relocated from Masai to the more centrally located Taman Molek.  The new premises are only one month old at the time of writing.

When I arrived on a Monday afternoon, they are packed.  And it’s a Monday!!!

The lovely dark green wall adds a touch of class.  There are black and white photos of days gone by on the wall.

I was glad to see Southern Border has a pretty concise menu— it means they are really good at the dishes they do.  From the looks of other diners boisterously tucking in,  it works. Also, it means they don’t have a large inventory and they pass the costs onto the customer.

Matcha Red Bean RM$9.90

A simple drink like that they have made it with care and attention.

Fried Eggplant RM$8.90

A relatively light and healthy starter.

Southland Chicken Chop Set RM$14.90

A most hearty and filling plate.

Cheesy Smoked Duck Pasta RM$15.50

The aromatics, with all that cheese and herb and smoked duck and garlic, was out of this world.  This was unexpectedly delicious.  The garlic adds a zing, a piquancy, another dimension to the creaminess and lifts the dish out of the ordinary.

Curry Chicken Fillet Rice RM$13.90

Filling chicken chop paired with aromatic curry.
